Our country, in spite of the very serious challenges posed by poverty and underdevelopment, is doing well, with
economic growth rising, stability everywhere, freedom entrenched. Having earned and won our freedom, we shall
tackle the remaining challenges, notably job creation, with the resolution and resourcefulness that we used to carve
our freed South Africa out of apartheid and repression. JumpStart is an ally in this ongoing cause.

As the JumpStart handbook is an educational publication, I should stress that education should come before
everything else. As one commentator recently said: “we should study as if education is going out of fashion”. Our
goal should be to break the cycle of poverty in our families by arming ourselves with the knowledge and skills
